This release is a collection of generative synthesizer patches created using the Make Noise Black & Gold Shared System, a eurorack modular synthesizer.
The rhythms, harmonies and melodies were suggested through the patching algorithm and, by means of the interaction between the modules, performed by the system; truly a collaboration between man and machine. These performances were recorded in a single take with minimal human interaction. There were no overdubs.
The Shared System consists of these Make Noise modules; Maths, DPO, modDemix, Optimix, Erbe-Verb, Echophon, WoggleBug, TEMPI, Brains, Pressure Points, Rene and tELHARMONIC.
The compositions use multiple related clock sources (TEMPI, Wogglebug) that produce envelopes, functions and rhythmic patterns (Maths) and drive two sequencers (Brains+Pressure Points and Rene). The sequencers send pitched control voltages to the two DPO oscillators and the tELHARMONIC, a multi-voice, multi-algorithm sound module. These signals are feed through the Erbe-Verb delay and Echophon reverb modules that add texture, atmosphere and additional audio artifacts.
The two channel output from the instrument was sent through a PreSonus StudioLive mixing console and captured to hard disk using PreSonus Capture 2 at 96 kHz. A Strymon Timeline and Big Sky were used in the signal chain to add additional atmosphere and texture. The resulting tracks were mixed and mastered using Cakewalk Sonar and the Izotope Neutron 2 and Ozone 8 plug-ins.
